Be among the first to explore Mudam's newest exhibition of works by one of the most influential artists of our time, William Kentridge, when "More Sweetly Play the Dance" opens in Kirchberg.

Over the last forty years, Kentridge has developed a major body of work at the crossroads of artistic disciplines, particularly in the fields of performance, theater and opera. Conceived as part of the red bridge project, an interdisciplinary collaboration between Mudam Luxembourg, the Philharmonie Luxembourg and the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, the exhibition is devoted to new and recent works by the artist and mixes drawings, works on paper, sculptures, films and sound and video installations.

Known for his animated films made from charcoal drawings using a unique technique of erasing and covering, Kentridge creates resolutely narrative works, in which he addresses issues related to history, memory and oblivion - all subjects that are explored through the prism of his native South Africa and his own personality as an artist engaged in the process of image creation. Distrustful of what he calls "the ideology of great narratives", he favours a worldview that focuses on the fragment, incompleteness and uncertainty.

One of the central themes of the exhibition at the Mudam is the artist's ongoing engagement with the construction of meaning through visual composition, language, sound and time - historical time, geological time, stage time and studio time. The presentation revolves around his new work for the stage, Waiting for the Sibyl (2019), a commission from the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, the Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg and Dramaten in Stockholm created in response to Alexander Calder's opera Work in Progress (1968).

There will be a special opening on the evening of 12 February which the public may attend by appointment only. For the remainder of the exhibition, no prior registration is required. The exhibition runs until 30 August.
