India Education Diary : Artecinema Film Festival Continues with Compelling Documentaries on Anish Kapoor and Shilpa Gupta
New Delhi – The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the British Council, hosted an evocative evening of art and culture in continuing with its Artecinema Film Festival. The event featured the screening of two insightful documentary films: Anish Kapoor – Descension (directed by Matteo Frittelli) and Shilpa Gupta (directed by Alyssa Verbizh), showcasing the brilliance and depth of two internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.
The evening commenced with a welcome note by Michael Houlgate, Deputy Director, British Council India, who highlighted the significance of fostering cultural dialogues between nations. Anish Kapoor – Descension
Directed by Matteo Frittelli (2015), this documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the creative world of Anish Kapoor, one of the most celebrated contemporary artists globally. The film focuses on his Descension exhibit, a thought-provoking installation specifically conceived for the Galleria Continua’s theatre/cinema in San Gimignano, Italy. Through interviews with Kapoor and immersive visuals of his works, the documentary captures the profound impact of his artistic explorations.
Shilpa Gupta
Directed by Alyssa Verbizh (2009), this documentary profiles Shilpa Gupta, a Mumbai-based artist whose multidisciplinary works probe themes of identity, societal power structures, and global conflicts. The film follows Gupta through the bustling streets of Mumbai—her eternal muse—and offers a behind-the-scenes look at her installations and performances showcased internationally in Paris and Lyon.

Artecinema is an international contemporary art film festival established in Naples in 1996 with the objective of introducing the general public to the various expressions of contemporary art through a selection of documentaries dedicated to the leading artists, architects and photographers on the international scene. Biographies, interviews, and narratives assembled with archival material allow the audience to delve into the world of art and observe artists at work in their ateliers, behind the scenes of important projects and international exhibitions.
